this print reflects that earlier performance.

Note: Ebizô IX first played the role of Sukeroku in this play
in Tokyo at the Tokyo Gekijô in June 1946.  Although
Ebizô IX's final Tokyo appearance in this role was in March
1953, it is possible that Gakô based this print on one of
Ebizô IX's prior performances.  This design was reissued to
commemorate his shumei at the Kabuki-za in April and May 1962.

Note: Ebizô IX would subsequently perform the
role at the Kabuki-za in December 1955, a
month after this print was made.  It is possible that
the print was conceived in anticipation of that
performance.  Shunsen previously made a print of
Ebizô IX in this role in 1954, based on a
performance at the Meiji-za in December 1952.

Medium: Hand-colored keyblock print (版画源画)
Personal Collection

Note: I can find no record of Ebizô IX playing a
character called Tokijirô in Tokyo.  A similar but
more detailed version of this design is shown in
the 2002 (bearing a 1957 date) and 1991
Shunsen catalogs (and appears to be a painting,
not hanga-genga).  It is possible that the actual
date of this print is earlier than 1957.

Ichikawa Ebizô IX (市川海老蔵) as

design is shown in the 2002 and 1991 Shunsen

Print Date: New Year 1959
Medium: Hand-colored keyblock print (版画源画)
Personal Collection

Note: This depicts a Soga brothers play such as
Soga no Taimen (曾我対面).  However, I have
not found an instance where all three actors
appeared in Tokyo in these specific roles at the
same time.  A similar but more detailed version
of this design is shown in the 2002 and 1991
Shunsen catalogs (and appears to be a painting).

Performance Date: 04/01/62; 05/**/62

Personal Collection

Note: This print is a reissue of the 1954 Ota print of the same actor
(under his prior name of Ichikawa Ebizô IX) in the same role at the
Kabuki-za in March 1953.  It appears designed to commemorate his
two month shûmei at the Kabuki-za in 1962.  He reprised the role at
the Kabuki-za in October 1964.
