Note: This is likely Nakamura Utaemon V
(中村歌右衛門) as Yodogimi (淀君) in Hototogisu
Kojô no Rakugetsu (沓手鳥孤城落月) or a similar
 play.  Between 1916 and 1925, Utaemon V played

actually a painting.There was a production of this play with Uzaemon
XV and Kikugorô VI at the Kabuki-za in July 1940 which could be the
production depicted in this work.   It is not known at this time how
the auctioneer was able to identify the actors, but that information
may have been on the decorative wrapper that accompanied the
work.
