Note: Mitsugorô VII also performed the role in Tokyo
at the Kabuki-za in November 1930, July 1933, April
1935, January 1938, and October 1938.  It is possible
that Shunsen based this print on one of those prior
performances.  A similar but more detailed version
of this design is shown in the 2002 and 1991
Shunsen catalogs bearing a March 1957 date (and
appears to be a painting, not hanga-genga).

NOVEMBER 1948

Onoe Kikugorô VI (尾上菊五郎) as
Hayano Kanpei (早野勘平)

Play:  Kanpei Harakiri (勘平腹切), Act VI of
Kanadehon Chûshingura
(假名手本忠臣蔵; 仮名手本忠臣蔵)
Performance Place: Tokyo Gekijô, Tokyo
Performance Date: 10/28/47
Print Date: ?
Artist: Natori Shunsen (名取春仙)
Medium: Hand-colored keyblock print (版画源画)
Personal Collection

Note:  This was Kikugorô VI's last appearance in
this role in Tokyo.  Kikugorô VI died on July 10,
1949, so depending on the publication date of
this print, it is possible that it was intended as a
memorial print.  Like most of Shunsen's hanga-
genga, it was likely made in the late 1950s.
However, this was a signature role for Kikugorô
VI, who first performed the role Ichimura-za in
June 1905, and reprised the role in Tokyo on at
least 9 subsequent occasions.  It cannot be ruled
out that the print was made prior to the end of
WWII and/or that it may actually depict some
pre-War performance.  The design is extremely
similar to the print released by Watanabe in 1929.

Ichikawa Ebizô IX (市川海老蔵) as
Hayano Kanpei (早野勘平)

Play:  Kanadehon Chûshingura

Performance Place: Meiji-za, Tokyo
Performance Date: 12/04/1955
Print Date: 11/1955
Artist: Natori Shunsen (名取春仙)
Medium: Hand-colored keyblock print (版画源画)
Personal Collection

Note: Ebizô IX would subsequently perform the
role at the Kabuki-za in December 1955, a
month after this print was made.  It is possible that
the print was conceived in anticipation of that
performance.  Shunsen previously made a print of
Ebizô IX in this role in 1954, based on a
performance at the Meiji-za in December 1952.

1959

Performance Place: ?
Performance Date: ?
Print Date: 03/1959
Medium: Hand-colored keyblock print (版画源画)

Note: I have not found an instance where both
actors appeared together in Tokyo in these roles.
They did perform the Michiyuki Tabiji no
Hanamuko (道行旅路の花聟) scene of Kanadehon
Chûshingura (假名手本忠臣蔵; 仮名手本忠臣蔵)
together at the  Osaka Kabuki-za in October 1955
and at the Minami-za in Kyoto in December 1955.
A similar but more detailed version of this design
is shown in the 2002 and 1991 Shunsen catalogs
(and appears to be a painting).

Note: The figure in the lower right would appear to be the ghost of Taira-no-Tomomori (平知盛) in
Funa Benkei (船辨慶).  It is possible that the figure at the lower left is Ôboshi Yuranosuke
(大星由良之助) in Kanadehon Chushingura (仮名手本忠臣蔵; 假名手本忠臣蔵).  This particular AP is
actually dated 1983, which could either mean it was dated by hand when it was sold after the edition
was made in 1982 or the 1982 publication date (which came from a dealer's website) was in error.
