Note: Uzaemon XV also portrayed Kanpei in a

reflects that performance.

Magazine: New Year's Appendix to Engei Shashin (演芸写真), Vol. 1,

Medium: Machine printing
Note: Hasui designed 34 machine-printed covers for Engei
Shashin (and its precedessor
Engei Shashin Chô) between October 1925 and July 1928.
Many of these issues contained
machine-printed forntispieces. Since they were offset
printed, they are outside the scope
of this website. An exception, however, has been made
for this calendar, which appears to
be unique in the Hasui canon.
FEBRUARY 1929
Onoe Kikugorô VI (尾上菊五郎) as
Hayano Kanpei (早野勘平)
Play: Act V of Kanadehon Chûshingura (假名手本忠臣蔵)
Performance Place: Kabuki-za, Tokyo

*Image courtesy of the Tsubouchi Memorial Theatre Museum
Note: Kikugorô VI first performed the role of Kanpei in
Tokyo at the Ichimura-za in June 1905. He reprised this
role
at the Kabuki-za in November 1907, at the Ichimura-za in
November 1910, at the Shinbashi Enbujô in February 1926,
and at the Hongô-za in April 1926. For a similar, but
later
portrait, see the entry for November 1947.
NOVEMBER 1947
Onoe Kikugorô VI (尾上菊五郎) as
Hayano Kanpei (早野勘平)
Play: Act V of Kanadehon Chûshingura
(假名手本忠臣蔵; 仮名手本忠臣蔵)
Performance Place: Tokyo Gekijô, Tokyo
Performance Date: 10/28/47
Print Date: ?
Artist: Natori Shunsen (名取春仙)
Medium: Hand-colored keyblock print (版画源画)
Personal Collection
Note: This was Kikugorô VI's last appearance in
this role in Tokyo. Kikugorô VI died on July 10,
1949, so depending on the publication date of
this print, it is possible that it was intended as a
memorial print. Like most of Shunsen's hanga-
genga, it was likely made in the late 1950s.
However, this was a signature role for Kikugorô
VI, who first performed the role Ichimura-za in
June 1905, and reprised the role in Tokyo on at
least 9 subsequent occasions. It cannot be ruled
out that the print was made prior to the end of
WWII and/or that it may actually depict some
pre-War performance. The design is extremely
similar to the print released by Watanabe in 1929.
