Note: This is an unnumbered test print (though not a test print

it is more likely an unfaded example of the first edition printing.

Note:  This is the first edition printing of this design (edition of 100),
possibly faded.  Gado IV performed this role at the Shinbashi Enbuj˘
in Tokyo in June 1924, and likely performed it in Kyoto around that
time.  It is also possible that the play was called Shin Asagao Nikki
(新朝顔日記), a new version of  Sh˘utsushi Asagao Nikki that was
sometimes performed in its place.

Note: This is the second edition printing of this design in a
variant color scheme.  See the entry for the Tsubouchi Memorial
Theatre Museum's copy for additional information.  A seemingly
similar version from the Ed Freis collection is shown in Brown
and Goodall-Cristante, Shin-Hanga: New Prints in Modern Japan
(Los Angeles County Museum of Art/University of Washington
Press 1996).  That copy is stamped on the verso as being a sample
print.  It is not known at this time the extent to which that sample
print may vary from this copy.
