Note: Kôshirô VIII also performed this role at the

rule out the possibility that this print reflects that
performance.  A similar but more detailed
version of this design is shown in the 2002 and
1991 Shunsen catalogs (and appears to be a painting).

Print Date: 04/1994
Artist: Paul Binnie
Print Title: Kenuki (毛抜)
Medium: Kappazuri print

Personal Collection (#10/80)

Note: This print would seem to have been based on a special gala
performance or a prior broadcast recording of Danjûrô XII's
performance.  Danjûrô XII's last regular performance as
Kumedera Danjô prior to the creation of this print that I could
find was at the Minami-za, Kyoto, in October 1992 before Binnie
arrived in Tokyo.  Danjûrô XII also performed the role at the
Kokuritsu Gekijō, Tokyo, in June 1991 and at the Kabuki-za,
Tokyo, in September 1990 and, as Ichikawa Ebizô X, at the
Kokuritsu Gekijō, Tokyo, in June 1982 and July 1973.

UNKNOWN DATES

Kumedera Danjô (粂寺弾正)

Play: Kenuki (毛抜), Act 3 of Narukami Fudô Kitayama
Zakura (雷神不動北山櫻)
Print Date: ?
Artist: Itô Shinsui (伊東深水)
Series: Kouta Kabuki Jûhachiban (小唄 歌舞伎十八番)
Medium: lithograph or collotype
Personal Collection

Note: The original Shinsui painting upon which this print
is based is dated 1961, so the print would have to be made
on or after that date.  Seeing as the prints were accompanied
by a cassette tape of kouta music, the prints likely date to
the late sixties at the earliest and more likely the 1970s.

Note: Some of the panels bear a passing resemblance to the small size Kabuki Jûhachiban
(歌舞伎十八番) prints Ota Gakô produced in 1931, but I do not feel that the resemblance
is sufficiently strong as to conclusively attribute the print to Ota.
