Note: The publisher information and artist cartouche
suggest that this print was likely made around the same
time as two known 1914 prints by Shunsen. The
butterflies on Kichiemon I's Kichiemon I's kimono also
suggest that the character might be Soga Gorô Tokimune
(曾我五郎時致), but I can find no record of Kichiemon I
playing this character in any play prior to 1929. One
possibility, however, is that the print depicts Kichiemon I
as Ôguchiya Gyôu (大口屋暁雨) in the play Kyôkaku
Harusame Gasa (侠客春雨傘), commonly known as
Harusame Gasa (春雨傘) or Jitsuroku no Sukeroku
(実録の助六). Kichiemon I performed in a production
of Kyôkaku Harusame Gasa at the Ichimura-za in
January 1913.

Note: Kikugorô VI, Mitsugorô VII, and Kichiemon I
appear to have performed their respective roles in the
same Tokyo production on only one occasion, namely, at
the Ichimura-za in November 1915. Whether all three
performed together at some later date outside of Tokyo is
not known to me at this time. The only other time
Kikugorô VI played the role of Sakuramaru in Tokyo was
at the Kabuki-za in January 1934.

Note: Information on the source of this image is lost, but
it is believed to be a woodblock print. Kikugorô VI first
performed his own version of this role in Tokyo at the
Ichimura-za in February 1922. He reprised the role in
Tokyo on at least 13 subsequent occasions, and gave
his final performance in the role at the Kabuki-za in
Osaka in March 1949, four months before his death on
July 10, 1949 at age 65. His last appearance in Tokyo
in this role was at the Shinbashi Enbujô in January
1949, although it is possible that this print depicts
Kikugorô VI in an earlier production.

private commission for some group. As Hanayama was not known
to be actively designing print in the
late 1930s, this print likely recycles a Hanayama design from the
1920s. I have not been able to find a
contemporaneous performance of Banzuin Chôbei in Tokyo, though it
could reflect a performance outside
of Tokyo during the summer of 1939.
