Print Date: 10/1921?
Artist: Miyake Hanayama (三宅花山)

Note: Although the date seems early for a Hanayama
print, this is the only Tokyo performance I could find
of Kikugorô VI in this role. It is possible that the
print reflects a later performance at a theatre outside
of Tokyo.

Note: This print designed by Shunsen's pupil Mori Shunchô

the
possibility that this print depicts Kikugorô VI as Yasuna

Ichimura-za in February 1922.

Tokyo at the Kabuki-za in July 1914. Prior to his 1925
performance, he also performed this role at the Ichimura-za

of this print, it is possible that Shunsen modeled this print
after Kikugorô VI's 1914 or 1919 performances.

Note: I have found a record of Kan'ya

reflects one of those performances.

Although Kikugorô VI's final Tokyo appearance in this role

likely
commissioned as a memorial print. Kikugorô VI first

Note: This was Kikugorô VI's last appearance in
this role in Tokyo. Kikugorô VI died on July 10,
1949, so depending on the publication date of
this print, it is possible that it was intended as a
memorial print. Like most of Shunsen's hanga-
genga, it was likely made in the late 1950s.
However, this was a signature role for Kikugorô
VI, who first performed the role Ichimura-za in
June 1905, and reprised the role in Tokyo on at
least 9 subsequent occasions. It cannot be ruled
out that the print was made prior to the end of
WWII and/or that it may actually depict some
pre-War performance. The design is extremely
similar to the print released by Watanabe in 1929.
