KABURAGI KIYOKATA
(鏑木清方)
1942
Ichikawa Danshirô III (市川段四) as Sanbasô (三番叟)
Play: Kotobuki Shiki Sanbasô (壽式三番叟)
Performance Place: Tokyo Gekijô, Tokyo
Performance Date: 01/01/42
Print Date: 01/1942?
Personal Collection
Note: While not dated, this surimono appears to celebrate
the 1942 debut of shamisen
player Nozawa Kizaemon II (野澤喜左衛門). Although I have not been
able to
confirm that Kizaemon II played the shamisen in this production,
the fact that this print
is a surimono is consistent with the production taking place at
the new year. As
Ennosuke II and Ichikawa Danshirô III both appeared as Sanbasô in
this production,
the print could depict either of them. However, based on a
1952 by Natori Shunsen,
the costume would suggest that the figure is Danshirô III.
