Personal Copy
Note: This print was printed by Binnie from recarved Tôshûsai
Sharaku
(東洲斎 写楽) blocks that the artist had acquired . The design
was
incorporated into the artist's print Kabukichô (歌舞伎町). This
print was
printed as close as possible in what is believed to have been the
original
unfaded color scheme of the Sharaku print. That color scheme
was
intentionally altered for theKabukichô print to give the figures a
more
ghostly pallor.

Note: This unsigned fan print has been stylistically attributed to
Seifû by the webmaster. Ganjirô I also performed the same
role
in Fuin Giri (封印切), Act I of Koi Bikyaku Yamato Ôrai
(恋飛脚大和往来) at the Minami-za in Kyoto in December 1914.
However, during the time period that Seifû is known to have
designed prints, he also performed the role at the Naniwa-za in
Osaka in June 1916 and again in February 1919, at the Minami-
za in Kyoto in December 1921, at the Misono-za in Nagoya in
February 1924, at the Naka-za in Osaka in January 1925, at the
Kabuki-za in Tokyo in November 1926, and at the Naka-za in
Osaka in March 1928, among other appearances. I cannot
rule out the possibility that this fan print reflects one of those
other performances.

Note: This appears to depict the famous Ninokuchi Mura traveling
scene
with Chûbei and Umegawa. The play Sharaku based his print on
is all
but forgotten today, but the scene remains a staple of kabuki
plays such
as Koi Bikyaku Yamato Ôrai (恋飛脚大和往来). Although the print is
usually
referred to as Sharaku: Elopement, "elopement" would appear to be
an
improper reading of "michiyuki" in the context of this play.

There is otherwise no known regular performance that featured

Utaemon VI's last regular performance as Umegawa that I could
find was at the Kabuki-za, Tokyo, in January 1985. Ganjirô
III,
however, performed the role of Chūbei during Binnie's time in
Japan in a production at the Kabuki-za in November 1994
