Note: This is a reissue of a 1897
print with the actors' cartouches
recarved and appears to be a
mitate-e. The original print was
published on June 17, 1897 and
reflects a February 1897 per-
formance at the Kabuki-za in
Tokyo that starred Ichikawa
Danjûrô IX as Kuronushi. This
print also bears a June 17, 1897
publication date, presumably
because the publisher didn't
bother or forgot to alter the
publication date. However,
seeing as Komazô VIII did not
assume that name until May
1903, this print could not have
been produced in 1897. (More-
over, Kichiemon I would have
been an 11-year old child actor
at the time.) Komazô VIII
portrayed Kuronushi in a prod-
uction at the Kabuki-za in March
1909 and Kichiemon I portrayed
Munesada in productions at the
Kabuki-za in June 1904 and
October 1910, but none of the
other actors in this print appeared
with either of them. Moreover, the
role of Komachi-hime seems
more of a role for Eizaburô V
(who changed his name in March
1903) than for Eizaburô VI. Minor
color variations are known.

Note: This is a reissue of a 1902
print with the actors' cartouches
recarved and appears to be a
mitate-e. The original print was
published on June 10, 1902.
This print also bears a June 10th
publication date but omits the
year of publication. Seeing as
Komazô VIII did not assume that
name until May 1903, this print
could not have been produced in
1902. Komazô VIII portrayed
Umeômaru in productions at the
Kabuki-za in November 1903
and December 1906, but only
certain of the other actors in this
print appeared with him. Minor
color variations are known.
