appeared in a production at the Teikoku Gekijô in June
1927.  It is possible that this print reflects Matsusuke IV's
performance in that production.  This print closely resembles
one made by Tanaka Shikô (田中紫光) around the same time. 
One wonders if they might be the same artist or if Shikô was a
pseudonym adopted by a publisher who knocked off

Note: Although Matsusuke IV performed this role multiple
times during his career, he only performend the role in Tokyo
twice during the 1920s, the period when Shikô was actively
making prints.  It is possible that this print reflects Matsusuke
IV's subsequent performance at the Teikoku Geikijô in June
1927.  This print closely resembles one made by Miyake
Hanayama (三宅花山) around the same time.  One wonders if
they might be the same artist or if Shikô was a pseudonym

Note: It is unclear if this is a woodblock print, a watercolor
drawing, or a hand-colored keyblock print for an
unpublished design.  Matsusuke IV died on September 5,
1928 at age 86.  He first played the role of Kômori Yasu
in Yowa Nasake Ukina no Yokogushi in Tokyo at the
Kabuki-za in September 1892.  Although Matsusuke
IV's last Tokyo appearance in this role was in June 1927,it
is possible that Gakô based this print on one of
Matsusuke IV's prior performances in that play or in
"Kirare Otomi."

Note: Matsusuke IV died on September 5, 1928 at
age 86.    He first played the role of Kômori Yasu
in Yowa Nasake Ukina no Yokogushi in Tokyo at
the Kabuki-za in September 1892.  Although
Matsusuke IV's last Tokyo appearance in this role
was in a June 1927 production of Otomi to
Yosaburô (お富と与三郎) at the Teikoku Gekijô 
it is possible that Shunsen based this print on one
of Matsusuke IV's prior performances in those
plays or in "Kirare Otomi."    Although purporting
to be hanga genga in the 2002 and 1991 Shunsen
catalogs, it appears to be a finished painting and I
have not found a hand-colored keyblock print for
