[New Version of Figures on the Stage]
(新版舞台之姿絵)

Note: I can find no record of Sadanji III performing this
role.  He did portray Yoshirô under his previous name of
Ichikawa Omezô IV (市川男女蔵) at the Tokyo Gekijô in
April 1949.  It is possible that the painting study for this
print was done at that time, but with Sadanji III's
intervening name change prior to the publication of the
print, a decision was made to use Sadanji III's current name.
Or perhaps the print was based on some performance that
Sadanji gave outside of Tokyo.  The print itself resembles a
photograph from a production at the Ichimura-za in
September 1915 when he performed the role under the
name of  Ichikawa Otora IV (市川男寅).
