Note:  Nizaemon XI also performed this role in
Kanadehon Chûshingura at the Kabuki-za in April 1921.
Given that 1921 and 1928 appear to be rather early and late,
respectively, for a Hanayama print, it is possible that the
print reflects an intermediate performance outside of Tokyo.

APRIL 1929

Kataoka Nizaemon XI (片岡仁左衛門) as
Yojirô (與次郎の母親)

Image courtesy of the Tsubouchi Memorial Theatre Museum

Note: It is unclear if this is a woodblock print, a watercolor
drawing, or a hand-colored keyblock print for an
unpublished design.   Nizaemon XI died on October 16,
1934 at age 78.  He first played the role of Yojirô in
Tokyo in Chikagoro Kawara no Tatehiki
(近頃河原の達引)  at the Meiji-za in April 1909.  Consequently,
this print could depict an earlier performance.

previous year, but it is not known at this time if Gatô
III and Matsunosuke III performed in that play.

Note: This appears to be a character from some version of
Gonin Otoko (白波五人男).  The publisher, Shibata, was an
Osaka publisher, so the play was likely performed in Osaka
or Kyoto.  Indeed, I can find no Tokyo performance with
Nizaemon XI in this role.  The rabbit depicted under
Eishô's signature could indicate that this print was made
during the Year of the Rabbit (1915, or less likely, 1927).

Note: I can find no record of Nizaemon XII or

lifetime, leading me to believe that it depicts
Nizaemon XI.   Nixaemon XI portrayed the
character several times in plays such as Goban
Teiheiki (碁盤太平記) and Ôishi Kuranosuke
(大石内蔵助).   It is possible that it was intended
as a memorial print, which would date it to the
mid-1930s.  Although purporting to be hanga
genga in the 2002 and 1991 Shunsen catalogs, it
appears to be a finished painting and I have not
found a hand-colored keyblock print for this
design.

        between February 1906 and
        November 1922.  Nizaemon XII
performed this role in Tokyo in
        February 1942.  Presumably one
        of those productions toured in
Osaka.  The relative youth of the
portrait suggests that it is more
        likely to be Nizaemon XII.

        Sadanobu III.  Nizaemon XI
last played this role in Tokyo at
        the Kabuki-za in April 1931.
        However, it likely reflects a
        performance in Osaka or
        Kyoto.  The following senshafuda
is probably by the same artist.
