the lines on the collar, proper right sleeve, eye-
brows, bridge of the nose, and hands from those
on any known version of this print.design.
Presumably the blocks were subsequently
recarved in whole or in part before a commercial
version of this design was released. See the
entry for the Tsubouchi Memorial Theatre
Museum's copy for additional information.

Artist: Yoshikawa Kanpô (吉川観方)

Note: This is an unnumbered test print (though not a test print
corresponding to the keyblock print shown above). It may be
a
color variant or else an unfaded example of the first edition
printing. See the entry for the Tsubouchi Memorial Theatre

Print Date: 1924
Artist: Yoshikawa Kanpô (吉川観方)

Note: This is the first edition printing of this design
(edition of 100),
possibly faded. Gado IV performed this role at the Shinbashi
Enbujô
in Tokyo in June 1924, and likely performed it in Kyoto around
that
time. It is also possible that the play was called Shin
Asagao Nikki
(新朝顔日記), a new version of Shôutsushi Asagao Nikki that was
sometimes performed in its place.

Note: This is the second edition printing of this design in
a
variant color scheme. See the entry for the Tsubouchi
Memorial
Theatre Museum's copy for additional information. A
seemingly
similar version from the Ed Freis collection is shown in Brown
and Goodall-Cristante, Shin-Hanga: New Prints in Modern Japan
(Los Angeles County Museum of Art/University of Washington
Press 1996). That copy is stamped on the verso as being a
sample print.

Play: Sanzen Ryô Kogane no Kurairi
(三千両初春蔵入; 三千両初春藏入)
Performance Place: Kabuki-za, Tokyo

Series: Meifu Miyage Geki no Omokage

Medium: ?

Note: It is unclear if this is a woodblock print, a watercolor
drawing, or a hand-colored keyblock print for an
unpublished design. Nizaemon XII died on March 16,
1946 at age 65.
1943
Kataoka Nizaemon XII (片岡仁左衛門)

the Kabuki-za in Tokyo in June 1941.
That production likely toured Osaka
around that time.
Kataoka Nizaemon XII? (片岡仁左衛門) as
Ôishi Kuranosuke (大石内蔵之助; 大石内蔵助)
Play: ?
Performance Place: ?
Performance Date: ?
Print Date: ?
Artist: Natori Shunsen (名取春仙)
Medium: Hand-colored keyblock print (版画源画)?
Note: I can find no record of Nizaemon XII or
XIII performing this role in Tokyo during Shunsen's
lifetime, leading me to believe that it depicts
Nizaemon XI. Nixaemon XI portrayed the
character several times in plays such as Goban
Teiheiki (碁盤太平記) and Ôishi Kuranosuke
(大石内蔵助). It is possible that it was intended
as a memorial print, which would date it to the
mid-1930s. Although purporting to be hanga
genga in the 2002 and 1991 Shunsen catalogs, it
appears to be a finished painting and I have not
found a hand-colored keyblock print for this
design.

this role at least
twice in
Tokyo, at the Kabuki-za in
November 1916 and at the

that one
