JANUARY - APRIL 1995

Ichimura Uzaemon XVII (市村羽左衛門) as
Oshimodoshi (押戻)

Play: Kyôganoko Musume Dôjôji (京鹿子娘道成寺)
Print Date: 01-04/1995
Artist: Paul Binnie
Print Title: Oshimodoshi (押戻)
Medium: Kappazuri print
Personal Collection (#6/80)

Note: This print would seem to have been based on a
special gala performance or a prior broadcast of
Uzaemon XVII's performance.  Uzaemon XVII's last
performance as Oshimodoshi that I could find was at
the Kokuritsu Gekijô, Tokyo, in August 1992 before
Binnie arrived in Tokyo.  He also performed the role
on several previous occasions, including at the
Kabuki-za, Tokyo (February 1976 and December
1969), the Kokuritsu Gekijō, Tokyo (March 1971),
and the Shinbashi Enbujô, Tokyo (January 1960).

UNKNOWN DATES

Oshimodoshi (押戻)

Play: Oshimodoshi (押戻)
Print Date: ?
Artist: Itô Shinsui (伊東深水)
Series: Kouta Kabuki Jûhachiban (小唄 歌舞伎十八番)
Medium: lithograph or collotype
Personal Collection

Note: The original Shinsui painting upon which this print
is based is dated 1961, so the print would have to be made
on or after that date.  Seeing as the prints were accompanied
by a cassette tape of kouta music, the prints likely date to
the late sixties at the earliest and more likely the 1970s.

[Kabuki Jûhachiban  (歌舞伎十八番)] Sugoroku

Print Date: ?
Artist: ?
Medium: Woodblock printed sugoroku
Personal Collection

Note: Some of the panels bear a passing resemblance to the small size Kabuki Jûhachiban
(歌舞伎十八番) prints Ota Gakô produced in 1931, but I do not feel that the resemblance
is sufficiently strong as to conclusively attribute the print to Ota.
