Note: Tokizô III first played the role of Shizuka Gozen in
this play in Tokyo at the Hongô-za in January 1928.
Although Utaemon V's last Tokyo appearance in this
role before the publication date of the print was in
April 1954, it is possible that Gakô based this print on
one of Tokizô III's prior performances.

Note: Jukai III's first appearance as Shirai Gonpachi in
Tokyo appears to have been in a production of Sono

in November 1959, four years after the date of this print.
He also appeared in productions at the Asakusa Shôchiku-
za in January 1927, and at the Osaka Kabuki-za in April
1946 and May 1947, but under his prior name of Ichikawa
Sumizô VI.  He also appeared as Gonpachi in productions
of  Ukiyozuka Hiyoku no Inazuma (浮世柄比翼稲妻)
and Suzu-ga-Mori (鈴ヶ森) at the Asakusa Shôchiku-za in
January 1914 and January 1925, respectively, but again as
Sumizô VI, not Jukai III.
