Note: This print was a collaboration between Kunichika and Yasuji,
with Kunichika designing the
figures and Yasuji designing the background. It is also a
reprinted version of an 1886 triptych that
had originally featured Sadanji I and Danjuro IX as Hanaosho and
Kyûmonryû, respectively. The
actors' cartouche was recarved to reflect the actors appearing in
the new production. Yasuji had
been dead for nine years at the time that this version was
published.

catalog gives the publication date as February 1900, other
known prints in this series were published in February 1902.
These actors appeared in a production at the Kabuki-za in Tokyo
in July 1893. This print, however, likely reflects a later
performance
in Osaka or Kyoto.
