Ichikawa Danjûrô XII (市川団十郎; 市川團十郎) as
Sukeroku (助六)

Play: Sukeroku Yukari no Edo Zakura (助六由縁江戸桜)
Performance Place: Misono-za, Nagoya

Print Date: 09/1994
Artist: Paul Binnie
Print Title: Sukeroku (助六)
Medium: Kappazuri print

Personal Collection (#8//80)

Note: This appears to have been Danjûrô XII's only known appearance in
this role during the time that Binnie lived in Japan prior to the creation of
this print.  Otherwise, Danjûrô XII's most recent performance as Sukeroku
in Tokyo appears to have been at the Kabuki-za in May 1992.  Danjûrô XII
also performed the role at the Kabuki-za in January 1988 and in April and
June 1985 and, as Ichikawa Ebizô X, performed the role  multiple times as
far back as November 1969.  This print is likely based on a broadcast
recording of one of these prior performances.

Note: This print would seem to have been based on a special gala
performance or a prior broadcast recording of Tamasaburô V's
performance.  Tamasaburô V's last regular performance as Agemaki
prior to the creation of this print that I could find was at the Kabuki-
za, Tokyo, in March 1991.  He also previously performed the role at
the Kabuki-za in March 1983 and January 1988.

                Print Title: Agemaki (揚巻)
                Artist: Paul Binnie
                Medium: Kappazuri fan print
                Personal Collection

Note: This print would seem to have been based on a special gala
performance or a prior broadcast recording of Tamasaburô V's
performance.  Tamasaburô V's last regular performance as Agemaki
prior to the creation of this print that I could find was at the Kabuki-
za, Tokyo, in March 1991.  He also previously performed the role at
the Kabuki-za in March 1983 and January 1988.  The print was
mounted on this fan sometime in the mid-1990s.

special gala performance or a broadcast recording of
Utaemon VI's performance.  Utaemon IV's last regular

December 1985.  His other prior performances include
those at the Kabuki-za, Tokyo, in June 1985, November
1973, November 1969, April 1966, April-May 1962,
November 1958, and January 1955.
