Note: Jukai III's first appearance as Shirai Gonpachi in
Tokyo appears to have been in a production of Sono
Kouta Yume mo Yoshiwara (其小唄夢廓) at the Kabuki-za
in November 1959, four years after the date of this print.
He also appeared in productions at the Asakusa Shôchiku-
za in January 1927, and at the Osaka Kabuki-za in April
1946 and May 1947, but under his prior name of Ichikawa
Sumizô VI. He also appeared as Gonpachi in productions
of Ukiyozuka Hiyoku no Inazuma (浮世柄比翼稲妻)
and Suzu-ga-Mori (鈴ヶ森) at the Asakusa Shôchiku-za in

Note: The original Sadanobu III print was presumably made between
February 1949 (when Ichikawa
Sumizô VI took the name Jukai III) and September 1954 (the
month that Jusaburô III died). Jukai III
frequently performed the role of Kataoka Naojirô during the
1950s. While the pair frequently acted
opposite each other and were nicknamed "Futatsu Kotobuki" (the two
Kotobuki) because both
actors had the ideogram Kotobuki in their first names), I have
been unable to find a specific
performance with involving both actors. It is possible that
it is a mitate-e.
